NCCIH: Maximizing the Impact of Mind and Body Interventions: Strategic Use of Intervention Adaptation Workshop

1:00pm-5:00pm ET

The virtual workshop will take place on July 23 and 24, 2026, from 1-5 p.m. each day.

The purpose of this virtual 2-day workshop is to explore unresolved issues related to why adaptations of mind and body interventions may be warranted to improve fit for specific contexts, when they are most appropriate across the translational pipeline, and how adaptations can be conducted in ways that maximize rigor, implementability, and real-world impact.

The overarching goal of the workshop is to advance our understanding of approaches to support the translation of evidence-based interventions into practice to improve population health and well-being. Although the workshop is focused on mind and body interventions, it will feature perspectives from different fields.

NCCIH: 25th Anniversary Celebration: Exploring the Impact of Whole Person Health

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) held a half-day symposium, “Exploring the Impact of Whole Person Health,” to celebrate the Center’s 25th anniversary on Monday, December 2, 2024. The event featured a Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies by Patricia M. Herman, N.D., Ph.D., titled “The Economic Impact of Whole Person Health.” In addition, there were two sessions considering the impact of real-world models of whole person health care: “The Potential Clinical Impact of Whole Person Health” and “The Challenges and Promise of Whole Person Health Research.” We welcomed researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general public to join us for the symposium. A reception followed the symposium.

NCCIH: The Economic Impact of Whole Person Health

As presenter of the 2024 Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies, Dr. Patricia M. Herman, senior behavioral and social scientist at RAND, will discuss the economics of whole person health and make the case for transforming health care from a disease-centric approach to a whole person model. In her talk, “The Economic Impact of Whole Person Health,” Dr. Herman will explore health and health care utilization for a hypothetical patient over her life from age 40 to 80 years under two care scenarios: conventional care versus a whole person care approach. She will illustrate how an investment beginning in early middle age to support a healthy diet, physical activity, and stress management can plausibly lead to improved health and well-being, as well as reduced health care spending.
